Women and Babies Hospital
SOFFIT artwork
Intent of the artwork
The soffit of the adjoining building, facing the healing garden, offers a canvas suitable for a suspended artwork or an artwork integrated into the soffit material.
This soffit sits above the crèche, retail areas and café alfresco spaces. It will be an entry point for those accessing the Women and Babies Hospital from Fiona Stanley Hospital.
Similarly to the healing garden wall artwork, this work must be calming, with the potential for textured, natural finishes such as weavings or organic and natural forms that reference broader connections to Country and cultural practices. Development of this work will be undertaken in close collaboration with the design team to ensure it does not compete with the architecture of the building, whilst still creating an engaging moment of arrival.
Cultural content
Artworks in this location may reference the use of endemic species (for example the Flooded Gum, Paperbark and Sheoak) in traditional birthing practices. Given the proximity to the gardens this location is well suited to works that are inspired by natural elements.
The artworks in these locations are not restricted to Whadjuk Noongar artists only, however any artists who engage with the cultural themes detailed above must have cultural authority to do so.
Scope
The artist’s scope includes the design and fabrication of any sculptural components, and the design only for any integrated treatments. This opportunity is well suited to illustrators, graphic artists, as well as sculptors, textile artists, and public artists.
The artist/s will be required to work closely with the architectural design team on these commissions, to ensure the proposal complements the design, complies to Australian codes and standards, and is within budget (budget to be provided in next stage of procurement process).
For design only components artists will be required to submit a digital file and written specifications only.
